It may seem like something of an impossible task to find affordable car insurance for young drivers these days – and though it is never going to be “cheap” there are some steps you can take which can help to reduce the costs and make them as affordable as possible.
It can be quite easy to get caught up in the moment when first passing your test and try and resist the temptation to go out and buy a car straight away before considering the impact it will have on your car Insurance.
- Buy a car which has cheaper insurance – make sure that the first car is in one of the lowest insurance groups. These may not be the most appealing types of car to a young driver who fancies himself in something sporty but there’s plenty of time for that.
- Avoid car modifications – body kits, alloy wheels and other modifications may help to make a car look more appealing but they also help to push up the insurance premiums. The only thing which is permitted and won’t make any difference at all to the price of car insurance are “go faster stripes” . . . and not forgetting the furry dice, I think they’re okay too.
- Pay the whole amount up front – this is the same with all insurance policies. If you can possibly afford to pay the whole amount up front then doing so will save you money. Monthly payment terms are very necessary for lots of people but they do cost more money in the long run.
- Get more driving qualifications – one of the main problems with new and young drivers is their inexperience – insurance naturally assume (and quite rightly) that they are more likely to be involved in accidents and have claims than more experienced drivers. That’s where schemes like “The Pass Plus” come in useful. Not all car insurance companies will offer reduced premiums for drivers who have taken and passed this course but it will surely help. Some of the bigger insurance companies do offer a discount.
